In 2003 Illinois Registered Surgical Assistant and Registered Surgical Technologist Title Protection Act  passed the Illinois General Assembly and was signed into law, the first of its kind in the nation.  Since then the number of Registered Surgical Assistants in Illinois has increased from 80 to almost 300. 

In order to qualify for Registration as under the Act, an individual must complete a medical education program approved by the IL Division of Professional Regulation and maintain current certification by ONE of the following: 

  • American Board of Surgical Assistants;
  • National Board of Surgical Technology & Surgical Assisting; OR 
  • National Surgical Assistant Association 
All the professional licensing Acts in Illinois, sunset (or expire) every 10 years. The Registered Surgical Assistant and Registered Surgical Technologist Act was set to expire December 31, 2013. However ISAA lobbied for the successful passage of HB 533, which extended the RSA/RST Title Protection Act until 2023. Special thanks to Sen. Iris Martinez (D-Chicago), Sen. Pamela Althoff (R-Crystal Lake) and Rep. Mike Zalewksi (D-Riverside) who sponsored our legislation and was signed by the Governor.


 In 2012, ISAA also worked hard for the successful passage of legislation to put an 18 month cap on the amount of time an insurance carrier could go back an recoup payment on claims already paid. See full text
